Cybelle Planète and eco-volunteering

  Who are the eco-volunteers?

Ecovolunteers are people who are sensitive to environmental issues and who want to take concrete action to preserve nature. They can join a mission alone or in a group, in any case, they will be part of a close team where all researchers, staff and volunteers share the same interests.

Thanks to their help in the field and their financial support, ecovolunteers guarantee the continuation of programs of research or conservation and protection of fauna and flora. Part of this work, or even the whole, owes its realization to the physical and financial contribution of the ecovolunteers!

Eco-volunteers actively participate in projects, and commit to working and living alongside scientists or professionals in biodiversity conservation. They may have to work long hours and do things never done before. The teams are generally made up of 4 to 15 people, depending on the mission. This personal and intellectual challenge is a rewarding and motivating opportunity. At the end of their stay, eco-volunteers will have their heads full of new ideas, enriched by a unique experience and real encounters.

Is eco-volunteering for me?

What are the possible missions / destinations?

Is this your first experience as an eco-volunteer? Are you under 25 or maybe still living with your parents?

First of all, you have to choose a team-based project whose duration is fixed in advance and whose lifestyle (culture, climate and food) does not differ too much from your family's habits.

If you live in Western Europe, you can participate, for example, in thestudy of whales and dolphins in the Mediterranean or the family wolf sanctuary in Portugal ?

Are you self-sufficient and used to travel?

In this case you can choose a more individual mission, which allows you to determine the length of your stay yourself and allows you to travel to other continents and discover other climates, Other customs and other eating habits in more rudimentary conditions. Proper preparation is essential to participate in a specific program in a particular region and is far more important than a broad knowledge of the wildlife that is found there.

What are the eco-volunteering missions proposed by Cybelle Planète?

Why do I have to pay a Biodiversity Donation as a Volunteer?

We often hear: "Is not funding for research, conservation, and nature conservation the responsibility of society, authorities, and businesses that exploit and benefit from wildlife? it not to ensure the smooth running of these initiatives? ... I am an ecovolunteer, should not I rather be paid instead of paying? "

Alas, it turns out that the conservation and welfare of fauna and flora are not high on the agenda of governments or companies, and those around the world. This is unfortunately the sad truth in most countries, irrespective of their political system or economic situation. We believe that biodiversity belongs to no one as it belongs to all of us. Biodiversity research and protection programs need to work harder to tackle the increasing pressure that society is having on nature. These missions need your support, both financially and in terms of the workforce in the field. Your contribution as a volunteer is therefore crucial to tip the scales!

The Biodiversity Donation you make for the Biodiversity Protection Program is an important support for the mission. The latter is the subject of a tax receipt and a tax deduction.

Are meals included in the mission expenses?

When meals are not included, it is always possible to eat at a good price, near the project or to prepare a meal yourself.

When particular diets are accepted (eg vegetarian) this is specified in the description. When meals are included, you often have to cook, participate in common races or help in the preparation of meals.

Conditions and requirements

What are the conditions of participation?

Projects are generally reserved for people over 18 years, with no upper age limit. Some missions accept minors, accompanied by their parents.

No special physical condition is required, except for the ability to participate in the field research work. On some missions, minimal physical conditions may be required, ecovolunteers are asked to remain realistic about their state of health.

Many missions take place outside the Francophonie, in which case the working language is English. Therefore, ecovolunteers A minimum command of English To participate in these projects. It is not about being bilingual but about being able to work effectively within the team.

  When participate?

You can bring your help to missions all year. Be aware, however, that projects take animal cycles and seasonal changes into account and that some programs are interrupted during certain periods.

Consider tourist periods on your destination if you can. In low season, the prices of air tickets are generally more interesting!

In order to promote a sobriety of eco-volunteering and travel, Cybelle planet favors projects of more than 3 weeks and scheduled for the long term.

  Is training or knowledge required?

No special training or knowledge is required To participate in eco-volunteer missions. You will learn on the spot what you need to know. If you have special knowledge or know-how (eg veterinarian), you will have to inform the project in advance, this will allow him to organize before your arrival and thus to optimize your contribution.

Why complete a medical fitness form?

Eco-volunteering missions can take place with very basic living conditions, extreme weather conditions, and in places quite isolated from the rest of the world. You will participate in field work that may require more or less physical effort. Your physical and mental condition will impact on other team members and the host project, in the sense that all participants share daily work and live together. In order to avoid possible difficulties, we kindly ask you to describe, as honestly as possible, your physical and emotional state.
Your answers will not necessarily call into question your participation, but will give enough elements to the hosting project members to tailor your on-site experience to your needs and capabilities, if necessary or possible.

Organization - In practice

When to arrive and when to go?

For some missions, the dates of arrivals and departures are indicated in the description. For others you can freely choose your dates. These will, however, be subject to the approval of project leaders.

When you register, the first day corresponds to your day of arrival at the project, and the last day to your day of departure from the project. Consider this when planning your trip!

Due to flight schedules, it is sometimes necessary to schedule a night on the spot the day before the arrival of the project.

  How to get there?

Air travel is the simplest and quickest form of transportation for distant destinations. The generation of greenhouse gases linked to air travel can be "partially" compensated by financing carbon compensation programs and territorial compensation for your eco-volunteering.

If you hesitate for ecological reasons, one of the solutions is to offset the impact of your flight on the planet By supporting one or more programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

For distant destinations, flights do not necessarily have to match your project participation dates, as this may be part of a longer trip. We will provide you with the information you need to organize your trip once you have registered.

  How accessible are the projects?

We must be careful that certain missions are very isolated and that communications by mail, telephone, fax or e-mail are extremely difficult and sometimes impossible. In some cases, you may not always be able to reach your relatives directly. For some, this isolation is precisely an additional motivation!

  What will my daily work?

Your work as well as your hours are determined according to the program, the needs of the moment, the research conditions ... The nature of your tasks may therefore vary depending on the situation. The page reserved for each mission on our website describes in detail the daily tasks of ecovolunteers. It is not always possible for us to describe in advance and in detail all your activities. You work where the need arises and where you are most needed. Field research is often subject to last-minute changes, despite all prior planning efforts. You will need to be understanding and flexible.

For certain missions, the household tasks (cooking, shopping or cleaning of the rooms) are the responsibility of the eco-volunteers. Be aware that these are not tourist hotels.

The atmosphere is informal and relaxed; It is therefore often possible to work together to satisfy everyone's wishes.

What is the type of accommodation on site?

Housing is usually simple and modest, a biological field station, a rented local house, a sailboat or a simple tent. Individual accommodation is only possible in exceptional cases. Most often, you must share the premises with one or more other eco-volunteers, if possible of the same sex. A kitchen, a bathroom and toilets are generally available but are for common use.

What is the support on site?

Ecovolunteer missions are not organized by professional tourism companies, but are fully set up for the purpose of research and protection of nature. The atmosphere is often relaxed and enjoyable and it is possible to arrange many things in consultation with the rest of the team. It is clear that the staff is not there to serve you or to entertain you during your free time. However, he is willing to explain the many facets of scientific research, fauna and flora, and conservation. From this perspective, you will see in them Expert guides and enthusiastic. Be aware that your companions too, need their privacy to be respected from time to time and know that you will have to be able to take care of yourself or entertain yourself during your free time.

What are the rules of conduct that must be taken into account?

Ecovolunteers are required to Adapt to the local way of life and behave in a respectful manner towards the fauna and flora, Depending on the instructions they receive from local staff. Throughout your mission, you are in close contact with the fauna and flora, as well as with the local population.

La charter of ecovolunteers discusses the main points to be observed on site

You may have to do to other cultures, perhaps also to another climate and food that you do not know. This is one of the exciting sides of these programs, but it also requires some adaptation on your part. The local population may defend values and habits that are very different from yours. Consider that many things that you are not used to are not better or worse, but simply "different". Take time to understand what surrounds you before you judge.

By participating in one of our missions You agree to follow a number of recommendations You will be reminded when you make your reservation.

  What about security?

During your mission, you face wild fauna and flora and this always involves some risk. In general, the risks are low. Whether in the wilderness or in a sanctuary, you are supervised by local professionals who know perfectly environment and its risks. It is very important to follow their instructions to the letter to avoid any risk of accident! When the mission takes place in a sanctuary, the proximity to the animals is greater. Although his last may seem "cute" or "docile", they are still wild animals and potentially dangerous. It must be taken into account! In general, direct contact with animals is reduced to a minimum.

In some cases, you are in areas where safety and transport standards, medical and sanitary devices, standards of accommodation, food, etc. are lower than what you are used to. This implies that you adapt to the local situation and not the opposite, as is the case in ordinary tourism. This should be taken into account, for example, by checking the dentist and / or doctor before departure.

Finally, depending on the mission, the possibilities of evacuation to a hospital are very variable (from less than 30 minutes to more than one day of transport). This information is given in the document to be downloaded on each page reserved for the eco-volunteer missions.
