Cetacean Expeditions 2017

Our engagement :

Shipments carried by Mediterranean Cybelle Planète guarantee a real commitment on the part of the association and its eco-volunteers. Indeed, for the sake of preservation of wild animals observed, the project wants to follow certain rules of observation of cetaceans in order to minimize the risk of impact on their business. The association also aims to reduce its carbon footprint by choosing to sail aboard a sailboat that consumes very little energy, using biodegradable products daily, limiting the consumption of fresh water etc ...

More than a trend, it's a state of mind!

An expedition at sea with Cybelle Planet is concrete action to promote the protection of marine life! Thanks to the participation of the largest number we can track large-scale and long-term changes in populations of many species: dolphins, whales, sea turtles ...
As an eco-volunteer structure Cybelle Planet is committed to respecting the Code of Ethics of the eco-volunteer.

Cybelle Planet warmly thank Stephanie for her testimony!

• What is your background and how did you become a volunteer for ecoguide Cybelle Planet?
My university course is pretty eclectic, but it is clear in general, it is a passion for the sea, nature and ecology. I obtained a degree in environmental geography, a coastal management in master and biodiversity management. Having volunteered for several organizations, I came across an offer Cybelle Planet, I tried my luck. The Director Céline Arnal, I think, enjoyed my scientific work and my artistic work (I am a photographer today!). The experience was fun and learned a lot, so I repeated the experiment :-).
• Describe to us your day on the sailboat?
Survey morning the hopeful eyes and slept late the dream-filled eyes! :-) More pragmatically: you get up early, to maximize the chances of observation, we brief the team, we set the trajectory and transects with the skipper and yet the sea is observed and yet to watch for whales, birds and other marine animals. It collects data on the weather, sea conditions, the number and behavior of animals when it crosses, and we laugh a bit too! The responsibility comes down to the team manager, make life on board goes well, that risks are minimized, the study is successful, the atmosphere is good, to reframe the volunteers when it necessary to motivate the troops after a tough day, to lead by example, and to understand the importance and impact of each investment.
• What are the main qualities for you to be a good eco-guide?
I think the best qualities a ecoguide must have are the same as for a good ecovolunteer: patience, organization, motivation, passion.
• You give a lot of your time, so what motivates you to volunteer for ecoguide Cybelle Planet?
Being eco-guide allows me to go out to sea beyond reason, to live my passion, failing to make a living. I have the chance to participate in the protection of cetaceans and marine environment with passionate and exciting team. And then a few weeks to adventure, on a sailboat, see Surveys and sunsets over the sea, sleeping in harbors dreams, hear blowing dolphins and whales during night shifts listen sperm whales in hydrophone sensor and count the time a fin whale, it gets worse, right?
• As qu'écoguide, do you have an ambassador role for biodiversity?
I believe do my job simply by contributing to the protection of biodiversity and changing mentalities volunteers ... I also hope to help change some scientific mentality!
• What is your best memory on board the Avocet of Ryme?
The striped dolphins that circled the boat, one night, for a quarter ... We could hear the blow very close and we could not see them back as they passed in the moonlight ... Or this Fin whale released a few meters from the boat when we despaired of finding the whale ... And as expected, also .... Every encounter with a marine mammal is a memory I will keep anchored in my memory as a unique moment, finally very few people have the chance to have!

NL 46 testimonies ecovolunteerAlain Cetaceans Mission, August 2016

"During this mission, I attended the counting of marine species and birds with availability on 24H. It should also participate in community life on the boat: maintenance tasks, meal preparation ... All were very ecovolunteers volunteers in sharing. And then the reward, apart from the pleasure of sailing navigation: dolphins, whales, sperm whales and turtles ... On board there is a friendly atmosphere, we're all in the same "galley" !, and forcing it creates links and everyone "rowing" in the same direction! What I remember ? A good sunburn! More seriously, the pleasure of opening to another, discover the world of sailing and the sea in general. I realized that our planet is fragile and in danger and that everyone on our scale must reduce our impact on the environment. "

NL 46 testimony ecovolunteerPascale, Cetaceans Mission, August 2015
"Past 2 the early hours, time to memorize the names, provenance, to determine who takes such berth sailor and our number all worked like a boat. Although I am diving, and dolphin I saw some underwater on this mission I had to develop my sense of observation. Search a breath, a wing requires concentration and it 2 hours. But what joy on the boat when a whale is sighted. Everyone on the bridge !!! Reduced space and good humor, we had as part of our weekly task some menial tasks but essential to perform in group 3 cleaning and maintenance of the boat, preparing meals and to finish the dishes. From 8h30, always in groups of 3, we take our quarter: One had the binoculars, the other the log sheet and 3eme the cetacean identification sheet. Motion for battle when a whale was pointing the tip of his wing. Beautiful week, beautiful weather, beautiful encounters with humans and cetaceans, although we would have liked to see more ... Yet we were spoiled: multitude of dolphins, pilot whales, whales and even whales! ".
