Go protect the marine fauna!

This summer, get on board to collect data on marine life in the Mediterranean Sea.

Take part in a biodiversity protection program.

Here we go again for Cetacean expeditions. Cybelle Planète is launching its 16th offshore campaign this summer for the protection and monitoring of offshore marine species. Join us and participate with us in the census of whales, dolphins, sea turtles, rays and other marine animals living off our Mediterranean coasts. A total of 13 one-week expeditions are planned between June and September 2021. All ecovolunteers wishing to act for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea are called to come and help us. Together, let's share this exceptional adventure and work for the protection of biodiversity.

Where do the expeditions take place?

The expeditions take place in the Pelagos Sanctuary off the Var, the Côte d'Azur and Corsica. Departures are from the port of Hyères for a mission period of 7 days. The crew is made up of 7 eco-volunteers, an eco-guide and a skipper. For a week, they sail aboard a sailboat in search of marine animals living offshore.

What does the Cetacean missions consist of?

The expeditions are organized as part of the participatory science program Cybelle Méditerranée.

The objective is to list all the species observed offshore: cetaceans, sharks, rays, jellyfish, turtles, pelagic fish, birds… The crew counts, photographs and notes each observation.

What is the data collected for?

All the information is integrated into the ObsenMer expert level database, which is freely shared with the scientific community. The data allow scientists and managers to put in place measures to protect marine species. The missions thus contribute to the advancement of knowledge on marine biodiversity, in particular on species threatened with extinction.
