Testimony of jeanmariecunin for the mission Protection and study of primates in Benin

Mission 14 days performed in January 2017

My participation

Browse a small forest to count the monkeys; note their number, activities, travel, etc.
Time (approximately): 9-12h then 14h-17h

My expectations

I really enjoyed my stay in Benin, the place, the people, everything is very nice; On the other hand, I am not convinced of the usefulness of a volunteer on such a short stay and with a qualification unrelated to the subject (in my case, a degree in finance). I think I mainly contributed financially, but I doubt I had any impact on primates and their environment.

My advice

Do not bring a white tshirt ...!

What I retain

A first glimpse of Africa, very useful from a pro & perso point of view
The main interest of this mission, besides being sensitized to ecotourism, is the possibility to take an interest in the Beninese culture and especially voodoo.
In conclusion, this mission has brought me a lot; on the other hand I am not sure of having brought a lot to the primates, unlike the previous volunteer, graduated in biology who remained 2 or 3 months.

My assets

Knowledge of Africa very useful for me who was looking for a job in Africa. From a pro point of view, this demonstrates a certain ability of resilience and adaptation to live 2 weeks in rural Africa.

From a personal point of view, it was exciting!
