Testimony of Claire Eloy for the mission Expeditions in the Pelagos sanctuary: study of Cetaceans and Biodiversity, France

7 days of mission in September 2019

My participation

Do quarters, observations, meals, housework, dishes ....
The alarm clock was often to 7h morning (but not required) which allows to appreciate the sunrise! The early departures allow to appreciate on longer time slots the offshore trips for cetacean observation. And sometimes take advantage of short exit windows if the weather is bad during the day ...
The departure times are decided the day before or during the night by the captain, always according to the weather.

My expectations

The week was very rich, on the one hand because you have to share a small space with people that you do not always know and on the other hand because sailing provides an immense feeling of freedom. In addition, we are all driven by the same thing: finding cetaceans. The bad weather that we sometimes had allows to sail (for those who like it!) And to spend moments meeting each other, sheltered in the saloon, to exchange knowledge about sailing. , weather, animals, cooking, ect ...

My advice

Traveling light, the boat and big enough but it is quickly filled!

To say that at sea, the weather is queen, and that nothing is assured. Nobody is master of the arrival or not of cetaceans in our field of vision.

And take advantage !!!

What I retain

In-depth knowledge of the marine environment, beautiful encounters, with other eco-volunteers, the ecoguide and the skipper.

My assets

Great attention (renewed) on the management of our waste.

An expanded look at the sea, and a better way to talk about it around me.
