Presentation

The Amazon rainforest is one of the largest reservoirs of biodiversity in the world where animals and plants abound and where their abundance is more than half the world's tropical forests! Unfortunately, the destruction of this exuberant nature also exists, it is mainly due to human. Today the majority of the equatorial forests of our planet is heavily impacted or destroyed. To fight against this disaster many local and global equities over to stop the abuse of the Amazon rainforest. In parallel, it is also important to conduct studies to assess the regenerative capacity of these damaged ecosystems and the extent of conservation efforts that need to be implemented.

This mission follows a scientific research program and specific conservation to try to better understand the regenerative capacity of the Amazon rainforest, and actions for it to be optimal. The project is conducted with international research laboratories, including the universities of Glasgow and Oxford. To this end, the project has set up a research station in the Amazon forest, in a Biosphere Reserve, World Heritage UNESCO, Peru.

Since 2009 project collects naturalistic and ecological information including at clay saline Where do parrots pecking and in different ecosystems of the forest. The comments relate to many species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, butterflies, and mammals (presence, relative abundance, distribution ...). databases, constantly fed thanks to the work of eco-volunteers, used to conduct studies on the long term. This will allow one hand to understand the current potential of forest regeneration, but also its adaptability and future changes.

As qu'écovolontaire you will live an extraordinary experience in a mission to both scientific and social. This program was designed so that local people can directly benefit and that jobs are created, the contribution of eco-volunteers is an additional aid, not a replacement of local human resources.

Location / Habitat

The project is located in the Biosphere Reserve of Manu, in the southwestern region of the Amazon Basin in South Eastern Peru. This region is known as one of the richest in biodiversity, with a significant share of primary forest.

The Biosphere Reserve of Manu, which takes place in this mission is a rainforest reserves the largest in the world, with a surface representing half the size of Switzerland. The region is located in the basin of the Amazon River, at the intersection of the rivers Manu and Madre de Dios, in 3800 meters above the level of the sea.

This region is one of the world's richest in terms of biodiversity. It is possible to observe all varieties of ecological levels found in the Amazon, making it one of the most important regions. On a single hectare, there can be up 250 different species of trees. In the Manu Biosphere Reserve, 222 1005 mammal and bird species have been recorded.

This area offers an ideal setting to conduct research, thanks to its location in the foothills of the Andes, where the mountains come join the plains region poorly studied so far.

Environment

The study area comprises 3 major forest types: regeneration, secondary, and primary. Secondary forest regeneration area is protected for over 40 years. It offers fantastic opportunities to study for knowledge building and regeneration process of tropical forests after periods of destruction by humans.

By studying the diversity of plant and animal species and their distribution, it is possible to measure the conservation potential of secondary forests and regeneration, an essential step for their protection. The research conducted so far, as part of the project showed that 90% of the species observed in the primary forest are also found in secondary forest! This goes well beyond the estimates made so far.

The rainy season or low season runs from January to March, but unexpected rainfall can be observed throughout the year. In the lowlands, temperatures can range from 35 ° C the day 20 ° C at night.

The biodiversity of the reserve of the biosphere of Manu is one of the richest in the world. There are more than 800 200 species of birds and mammals. The altitude area (Puna) is home to species like the Lama and Alpaca. In the mountain forest (cloud) it is possible to observe the magnificent Rooster-de-Roche Peru, bears, ferns and dense. The bottom elevation is inhabited in turn by the Black Caiman, Giant Otter, 13 monkey species and more than 1000 birds. This abundant wildlife is largely unknown. In recent years 10, 1150 near new plant species have been identified in the park, and in a limited area! It is very likely that the number of species living in this area is undervalued.

The study area is home to many species known to be rare and / or endangered, such as the blue-headed macaw, the Jaguar, the Tapir Brazilian, the Armadillo, and woolly monkeys. In Peru we can observe 10% of mammal species, 10% of amphibians, and 20% of birds and butterflies in the world. To this can be added to many species of fish, reptiles, invertebrates (with 500 arthropod species).

This makes this mission unique place to discover fauna and wild flora and lush!

Involvement ecovolunteer

Participation 16 days

Your experience will not be the same whether you participate 2 weeks (16 days) or more. Participation two weeks will not allow you to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to effectively help the various projects of research and conservation. However, you can accompany more experienced volunteers and researchers and project members involved in community development programs. A great opportunity to understand and learn about conservation work in tropical forests.

Participation 33 days or more

You will have the opportunity to train you to participate effectively in research and conservation. On arrival, you will begin your mission by 7 day program during which you will receive the necessary training to be able to work in the jungle and understand the various ongoing programs. (This training is reduced for 2 weeks of missions). Then you can participate, as appropriate, to the various research programs and eco-development in progress under the direction of project staff (2 activities per day on average):

  • Tracking Aras Coulons: comments clay saline near the beaches at dawn: these clay cliffs are a gathering place for thousands of parrots that come ingest and assimilate the earth and its minerals,

  • Monitoring of birds in different areas of the forest regeneration: daily transects and census of bird species, trappings

  • Projects herpetology (amphibians and reptiles): transect counts, trappings ...

  • Tracking butterflies trappings at different levels of the forest canopy high, medium, and soil.

  • Monitoring of mammals at different levels of the forest canopy high, medium, and soil (including tapir, howler monkeys, peccaries): laying and collecting cameras.

  • Study of the regeneration of the forest, followed by biomass produced, phenology, canopy .... The samples are weighed and dried.

  • Contribution to the local eco-development: you help the development of local initiatives to reduce poverty and malnutrition due to destruction of forests, mines, and over-development of agriculture.

  • Participation in the maintenance and development of vegetable gardens with women, which contributes significantly to reducing malnutrition.

  • Participation in agroforestry programs, combining crops and tree plantations.

interns

Multimedia internship and environmental communication : The project offers internship sessions of 3 months dedicated to the environmental journalist. These internships are a unique chance for participants to develop their multimedia skills in the field, with a combined approach to conservation biology, research, and sustainable and social development.
