Presentation

The hosting project is responsible for the conservation of the biodiversity of a concession of 200 hectares, contiguous to the National Reserve of Tambopata. This region of the world is one of the hotspots of global biodiversity and conservation measures are a priority to reduce the illegal logging of the forest and preserve particularly sensitive and endangered species. This project was created in 2016 and many programs are being run together to ensure its development. It follows several objectives:

  • Better understand the impact of human activities on Amazonian wildlife.
  • Collect information for decision-makers to promote the implementation of protection measures for the Amazon rainforest.
  • To have a positive and measurable impact on the concession.

This project is run by local biologists specializing in jungle biodiversity, especially primates and bats. Field studies depend on ongoing research and can be highly variable. Some research topics are conducted in the long term such as the behavioral study of the spider monkey, Simia paniscus, or gray Callicèbe, Callicebus moloch ; the botanical study of the trees and the monitoring of their illegal exploitation ... the volunteers will be integrated into the current research programs, they will also be able to take part in the maintenance and the development of the research station, the networks of paths, and from the organic farm.

Location / Habitat

This mission takes place in a concession of 200 hectares contiguous to the National Reserve of Tambopata. This region is known for its high level of biodiversity, which can be explained by several environmental features such as:

  • a climate transition area between "humid tropical" and "subtropical forest",
  • a very variable altitude (from 200 to 2000 meters),
  • rapid changes in temperature,
  • rainy and very marked seasons,
  • patches of savannah (meadows or "pampas") particularly well preserved,
  • .

The rains are regular all year, but the driest season remains from May to October, and the wet season from November to April, the months of December to February being the rainiest.
Between April and August, some "cold" days can be observed with a temperature of 9 - 13 ° C.

Wild fauna and flora is especially abundant scientific estimates reveal more than 1500 species of plants, 160 species of mammals, 1200 species of butterflies, and 100 species of amphibians.

It is possible to observe: jaguar, Panthera onca, cougar, Puma concolor, tapirs, the fierce harpy, Harpia harpyja, the peccary with white lips, Tayassu pecari, and many other species of monkeys, birds, frogs, bats, insects ...

Involvement ecovolunteer

As an ecovolunteer you are fully involved in long-term research and monitoring programs. The team consists of qualified and experienced biologists who will share their knowledge with participants on:

  • Wild fauna and flora, the ecosystem of the rainforest,
  • Threats and human pressures on the forest, climate change,
  • Deforestation and the solutions proposed by the biology of conservation,
  • Orientation and survival in the jungle,
  • .

Your activities will be very variable and depend in particular on the season:

  • Jungle patrols and trail tracing,
  • Collection of data on fauna and flora and biodiversity in general,
  • Monitoring illegal poaching activities,
  • Helps maintain and develop the research station.

Eco-volunteers will also be able to help trainees and researchers in their research project. Time will also be spent on the computer entry of the information collected.
You follow a weekly work schedule, averaging 6 at 8 fieldwork hours per day, and a day and a half free per week.

interns

The project accepts trainees. Applications must be made at least 6 months in advance and will be accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on the availability and profile of the candidate. If the student does not have a research subject, the project may propose one, in consultation with the student and his / her university.

The internships must take place on 4 weeks minimum. The trainees will have a scientific supervisor on site but will have to be very autonomous in their work to carry out their subject.

Internship applications must be made to Cybelle PlanèteWe will help you in your efforts.

  • 7 day: ½ day of rest,
  • 8 day: day of rest,
  • 9 Days to 13: Activities related to ongoing research and conservation programs,
  • 14 day: ½ day of rest,

Accommodation

The biological station is very rudimentary and suitable for research in the jungle. It is the ideal place for those who like to live close to the wilderness. The resort has a common area for rest, work and meals. There are also several hammocks available in the resort.

You share a dormitory with 1-3 other ecovolunteers, as well as a bathroom with shower (cold). You are responsible for cleaning your dormitory and bathroom, as well as all the common areas of the biological station.

Electricity is provided by generators that are only active for a few hours during the day. You will be able to charge your electronic equipment in the evening, and at 19h00, the lights are off.
The kitchen is common and the meals are taken together. Ecovolunteers participate in turn in the preparation of meals. The food is simple but healthy and local style. Vegetarians and vegans are welcome, they should report it when they register.

The races are done once a week in Puerto Maldonado. Ecovolunteers will help unload the boat and transport supplies to the station.

Capacity

The project hosts up 10 ecovolunteers both.

Dates

Your arrival and departure must be on a Wednesday or Saturday. The project is open all year to ecovolunteers, a minimum participation of 2 weeks is required for ecovolunteers, and 4 weeks for trainees. The maximum participation period is 6 months.
