Presentation

This mission is taking place on a small island in southern Thailand. The project is an NGO that has been working for more than 20 years to develop locally conservation programs including sea turtles, mangrove, and coral reefs. As turtle laying has become rarer in recent years, the project has initiated several new activities related to the environmental protection of the island, to which ecovolunteers will also be led to participate: monitoring the impact of oceanic plastic pollution, monitoring marine herbarium, environmental education in schools and with tourists, research on certain animal populations of birds, dolphins, tortoises ...

The scientific work conducted by the contribution of volunteers has allowed the implementation of conservation strategies for local natural resources, and the implementation of an environmental education program in schools. The project is also committed to helping local communities develop an agreement in operation with natural resources. For example by encouraging the development of ecotourism as a sustainable alternative.

By contributing to this mission, you will actively participate in the on-site research program under the guidance of the project staff. You can learn a lot about Thai culture.

Location / Habitat

Phra Thong Island has an area of about 100 km2; 200 km north of Phuket, it is about 5 km from the Thai west coast in the Andaman Sea.

Habitat

The east coast of the island is covered by mangroves on the opposite side there are sandy beaches with a length of 15 km. The tourist development on the island is very limited with 3 small hotels offering bungalows that do not disturb the landscape.

One can observe different habitats on the island of Phra Thong: forest, savanna, mangrove and coral reef. On one of the neighboring islands, Ko Ra, we can even find the primary rainforest.

The island has no electricity or road.

The climate is tropical with two main seasons: the rainy season (April to November) and the dry season (December to March), with an average temperature of 28,7 ° C.

The project focuses on four species of sea turtle: the leatherback turtle, Dermochelys coriacea, Olive ridley, Lepidochelys olivaceaThe green turtle, Chelonia mydasAnd hawksbill Eretmochelys imbricata.

Mangroves and coral reefs are home to a wide variety of species.

Monitoring of seagrass has 9 value species of marine plants, the most widespread is Halophila ovalis. The latter turns out to be one of the favorite foods of Dugongs and it seems this rare mammal is present in the region.

5 species of freshwater and terrestrial turtles were found on the island: Cuora amboinensis, Cyclemys dentate, Heosemys spinosa Siebenrockiella crassicollis et Indotestudo elongate.

In addition to these species, we find on the island hornbills, sea eagles, and many other beautiful and colorful birds, as well as monitor lizards, pangolins, deer, macaques, otters, crabs, reef fish, bats mice, lizards, snakes, dolphins, mangroves, coconut palms, etc.

Involvement ecovolunteer

During this mission the volunteers follow a research program under the direction of members of the host project. Daily activities will be:

  • Tracking sea turtles: daily patrols along the beaches (15 km on average). The turtles will be counted as well as their eggs and the observations noted. These follow-ups can take place very early in the morning. During the clutch season, nocturnal surveillance of certain nests will be organized: groups of 2 ecovolunteers will, in turn, camp on the beach near the nest until the eggs hatch.
  • Behavioral observations of turtles: daily monitoring of turtles in their natural environment.
  • Collection of weather data and monitoring of the erosion of the beach,
  • Study and monitoring of the island's wildlife: birds, monkeys, tortoises ...
  • Monitoring, study and reduction of plastic waste,
  • Environmental education in the village and English courses which volunteers will provide assistance (provided there are enough children in school).
  • Participation in community activities.

Other activities may be requested depending on the needs of the project during your participation, for example beach cleaning, equipment preparation, DIY menu, or communication aid.

Note that the number of turtle clutches tends to decrease, so it is possible that ecovolunteers do not dedicate the integrity of their stay to turtle conservation but also to the other areas mentioned above, according to the needs.
